Walk With Us

The Walk to Emmaus is a Christian spiritual renewal and formation experience that begins with a three-day short course in Christianity. It is an opportunity to meet Jesus Christ in a new way as God’s grace and love are revealed to you through other believers.

The Walk to Emmaus is an adaptation of the Roman Catholic Cursillo (pronounced cur-SEE-o) Movement, which originated in Spain in 1949. Cursillo de Cristianidad means "little course in Christianity." The original Cursillo leaders designed the program to empower persons to transform their living and working conditions into Christian environments. During the 1960s and 1970s, the Episcopalians and Lutherans, along with several nondenominational groups, such as Tres Dias, began to offer Cursillo. In 1978, The Upper Room of the General Board of Discipleship adapted the program for a primarily Protestant audience and began to offer it under the name The Upper Room Cursillo. In 1981, The Upper Room made further adaptations and changed the name of the program to The Upper Room Walk to Emmaus.

In 1984, The Upper Room developed a youth expression of Emmaus called Chrysalis. In 2015, Face to Face was developed for older participants who are not able to attend the 72-hour Emmaus weekend experience.

The program seeks to invite men and women, ages 60 and older, to experience Jesus through a a multi-session journey, covering subjects such as discipleship, mission, grief, and end-of-life issues.

Aldersgate Emmaus was one of the early communities in the Emmaus movement. We were the first community formed in Florida and the 3rd community established nationwide.

Our History

Meet Our Community Lay Director

As you know, The Walk to Emmaus experience holds Great power to transform lives. This power of course, comes from the Holy Spirit, but did you know that it also comes from our core scriptural values? They are The Great Commandment—Matthew 22:37  The Great Commitment—Matthew 16:24  The Great Requirement—Mica 6:8  The Great Commission—Matthew 28:19-20 and The Great Redemption—John 3:16. How many times during your walk did you hear these scriptures referenced?

Last year, our community stepped forward in Greatness as we refused to let the pandemic keep us from showing Christ that He can count on us. We held 5 of only 230 worldwide Emmaus events (Walks, Flights, and Encounters) between April and October 2022.  The board thanks all of you who sponsored, worked the teams, provided supplies, green agape, attended send-off, candlelight or closing and prayed for our combined 87 pilgrims.

Brothers and Sisters, I pray you will join me this year in showing Christ that He can count on us to continue feeding the fire of His love to the pilgrims He is calling to our 4 scheduled walks. We need every babe chick, cluck hen and rooster to show their Great light to completely fill the rosters and get back to the Aldersgate tradition of leading the Emmaus communities in Florida. Let’s crow and grow with Christ!

DeColores!
